The Mustard field has been used in Indian pop-culture to represent romance. Two lovers, running away from home – where they have no space to make out because they still live with their parents or joint-families – land up in the middle of a mustard field and kiss behind two mustard flowers.

Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and even Assam are some of the leading producers of Mustard in India. Contrary to popular belief, the stats of Punjab doesn’t feature in the Top Ten State list when it comes to Mustard seed production!

I’ve always wanted to have myself photographed in a Mustard field. Alas, I have not one such picture. So, I thought I’d paint it and wear it instead.

The top of the painting is textured.

The edges are also painted in the same style and texture.

The painting weighs 20 grams, including the magnet clasp. Wearing on a thin t-shirt will drag the t-shirt down in an unsightly manner. I recommend wearing this on a formal shirt or other textile that will not easily warp. Or you could display this on a bare white canvas and hang it for display.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Do not keep anything on top of the brooch as the texture will get flattened and reduce the three-dimensional effect.

This can sometimes be repaired – the varnish and paint will bounce back on its own but it can take months – best to avoid.

This is a piece of art. Just like you wouldn’t sit on a painting, scratch it on purpose or try to bend it, use similar care with this piece.

Ideally, store flat wrapped in butter paper that comes in the packaged box, which is shipped to you.

Do not wrap in plastic. Plastic will stick to varnish / acrylics & leave an impression.

Keep away from solvents like isopropyl alcohol and perfume. If such contact is made by mistake, do not try to wipe it. Leave it alone to dry. Do not touch it. The alcohol will evaporate and the varnish will dry on its own.

Excessive heat or cold are best avoided.

If it gets dusty / linty, use a soft paint brush to brush into the crevices gently.
