“Contemporary Art” simply means art that is being produced today. Starting in the second half of the 20th Century and continuing into the 21st Century. Art being produced by artists alive today, like the art I create, is Contemporary Art.
It is art that is emerging and established, new, and you can meet the artist!
Art can seem mysterious and out-of-reach and unapproachable. The words generally used to describe art don’t usually help either. But art is simply anything that you enjoy looking at. Something that you look at, that gives you a nice experience and make you want to immerse yourself more in it, is art. It could be something that you listen to – art doesn’t have to be JUST visual. It could be audio-visual. Or a combination of various media that combine to engage all your senses. Art is something that brings you joy. That’s it. Some artist has probably poured out their soul in creating something – you don’t even have to fully comprehend their journey or story – all you have to do is show up and enjoy what they have put out into this world.
Since I re-started my own art journey early this year, I have been paying more attention to the art world in India. It isn’t as accessible as I had hoped, but it is something. I stumbled across the announcement for the Delhi Contemporary Art Week by accident, on Instagram. They are @delhicontemporaryartweek on Instagram and this is their THIRD Edition.
Impressively, at least to me, they even have a hashtag : #DCAW2019
From their Instagram bio : “DCAW is organised by 7 Delhi based galleries focusing on contemporary art, showcasing artists from India and the sub-continent under one roof.”
There’s sculpture and a host of materials that have been used to create the various artwork : acrylics, oil, photo prints, paint on photo prints, other mixed media, paper, canvas, metal, packaging material, thread, layers of paper, beads, embroidery, etc.

Delhi Contemporary Art Week, 2019 is on from the 1st of September till the 7th of September at the Visual Arts Gallery at The India Habitat Center. It’s literally just a week, so try to make time to go see it as soon as possible. Over your lunch break perhaps? It opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m. except on the last day, when it closes at 2 p.m. Entry is free. There are at least 50 artists whose work is being showcased at this event.
I’m a complete n00b when it comes to things like the art world and the art market, or how galleries work or how artists work with galleries. But, I love looking at and immersing myself in art and I enjoy creating some of my own.
