This is entirely in response to an email I received. The email is indicative of the state of the industry in India currently. Blogging specifically but also how creatives and “freelancers” are treated in general. And how 99% of the fashion weeks in India are exercises in bullshit. As a blogger, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY TO GAIN ENTRY. EVER. And please do not ever be embarrassed or feel desperate to ask for money. The world goes round and round on the basis of money for fuck’s sake, we need to get over our shame. If we don’t we will never be able to ask for what our work is worth. Not, “What is it worth to me?” but “What is it worth to the client?” And if it’s not much, then when are they coming to you in the first place? As much as we like telling clients and agencies to get their heads out of their asses, we forget that we need to pull our heads out of our asses too. Go ask for money. It’s better to be turned down – “No money” – instead of working for free. “Working” for free, is still “work”. And don’t tell me you’re not charging because you don’t “need” the money. I hope you fuck off and die. Bye! ( Seriously though, this is the world of business. If you’re not charging because you are wealthy and don’t need it to pay the bills, no one’s going to stop you. You do what you have to do with your little on-the-side hobby. Meanwhile, the rest of us have a business to run and a whip to crack. )
